We are pleased to report that Thailand has become the 99th country to sign up to the International trade mark system and as of 7 November 2017 it will be possible to designate or subsequently designate Thailand under International trade marks. In 2015, the Thai trade marks office received over 38,000 applications for new trade marks nearly 19,000 of which were from individuals and organisations not resident in Thailand(*). Thailand is a country which only accepts single class applications before the national trade marks office and the ability to file multi-class applications via the international system is a welcome development which will hopefully translate into significant costs savings for Applicants, although the fees for Thailand are yet to be announced.
The International trade mark system (commonly referred to as ‘the Madrid system’ because it is governed by the Madrid Protocol and the Madrid Agreement), is a cost effective way of obtaining protection in a number of countries around the world via a single centralised application at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
