Speaking at the in-cosmetics formulation summit

We are excited to announce that Consulting Patent Attorney and Healthcare and Beauty industry team member Julie Barrett-Major will be speaking at the in-cosmetics formulation summit on 26 October 2017.

Julie’s long career history in this field lends itself to her topic of choice: “Patents – an excellent way of finding out about ‘new natural’ materials from biotechnology”. In this session, Julie will discuss the increasing number of ‘new natural’ materials designed as replacements for familiar functional cosmetic materials. Julie will cover how patents provide a way of exploring these new natural materials and also provide guidance on how to:

  • Read, understand and make use of patents
  • Stay ahead of the competition – patents as information and protection
  • Avoid legal problems – preventing infringement of others’ rights

About Julie

Julie began training in 1979 and qualified at Wellcome (now GSK), after which she moved to Sandoz (now Novartis) in Basel, Switzerland  Julie later acted as Head of the European Patent Department  for Merck & Co., Inc., and became a member of the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)’s IP Committee.

After a period in private practice, when much of her chemical work was for cosmetics and ingredients companies, such as Henkel and Revlon, Julie set up a consultancy specialising in providing in-house style patent services to cosmetics/life sciences companies. Here, her clients included Boots, Croda Chemicals and Reckitt & Colman (now Reckiitt Benckiser).

Julie went on to found and then directed the intellectual property department at Norgine, a European specialty pharmaceutical company.  Beginning with patents, Julie and her team ultimately took charge of the company’s trademarks portfolio, and also dealt with various design and copyright aspects of the company’s business. Her experience at Norgine continued and deepened Julie’s experience of the IP aspects of formulation and process technologies, and of in- and out-licensing, venture capital, and late-stage product and commercial development. Julie joined A.A. Thornton & Co. in May 2016.
